Caring and Compassionate Pet Euthanasia

Euthanasia is something most people would rather not think about, unfortunately, pets become old and ill, and when they appear to be suffering, sometimes pet euthanasia is the most caring and compassionate thing a pet owner can do for their pet.

Understanding When It's Time to Say Goodbye

euthanasia

It can be difficult for pet owners to determine when it’s time to say goodbye to their beloved pets, especially if your pet has good days and bad days. If you are unsure as to whether it’s time to say goodbye, Higley Road Pet Clinic can evaluate your pet’s health and answer your questions in order to help you make a decision. Here are some questions to determine your pet's quality of life.

1. Is your pet in chronic pain and medications are no longer helping?

2. Has your pet stopped eating and /or has lost weight due to chronic illness?

3. Does your pet have chronic vomiting and/or diarrhea that cannot be controlled with medications and is causing weight loss?

4. Has your pet's activity level decreased and they are no longer able to perform routine daily functions?

5. Is your pet unable to stand or move without assistance?

In-Office Pet Euthanasia

Many pet owners choose in-office pet euthanasia, however, they still want their pet to be comfortable for the journey. If your pet is anxious in the car or at the clinic, sedatives are available to help make the journey more comfortable for your pet.

Once you arrive in our office, you will have the option of choosing how involved you wish to be in your pet’s final moments. If you wish to stay with your beloved dog or cat throughout their final moments, our team will escort you to a private room where you can say your goodbyes and hold your pet while he or she passes.

During the procedure, your veterinarian will give your pet a sedative to put them to sleep then inject the medications that help your pet pass peacefully. Once your pet has passed we will arrange cremation services for your pet, and you have an option for your pet ashes to be returned to you. Alternatively, some pet owners prefer to make their own arrangements with alternative crematory services or a pet cemetery.

Referrals for At-Home Pet Euthanasia

An increasing number of pet owners are choosing at-home pet euthanasia in order to help their pets be as comfortable as possible and in a familiar environment. The process for at-home pet euthanasia is essentially the same as at an office. The only difference is that a veterinarian brings the medications to your home to be administered. Being at home also gives you the option of having your pet put to sleep either indoors or outdoors, depending on which you think your pet would prefer. Once the medication has been administered and your pet has passed peacefully, you will be given time to grieve. When you and your family members are ready, the veterinarian will have options for your pet’s remains.

Unfortunately the doctors at Higley Road Pet Clinic are unable to perform at home euthanasia services at this time, however, we can recommend several at home euthanasia services.
